THE MENS HEALTH PROGRAMME

The Mens Health Project takes place here in the community centre.

Research shows that men do not pay enough attention to their health and wellbeing. A new initiative launched in September 2009 gave 30 men, in Dublin’s North Inner City the chance to experience how small lifestyle changes, for example, becoming more active, eating a balanced diet, drinking responsibly and quitting smoking, can lead to positive health benefits. Over the 10 weeks of the programme participants learned about Fitness – Health & Lifestyle – Cookery & Food.

The inspiration for this new initiative is the Wellman Programme developed by Glasgow Celtic for men aged 40 – 60. Glasgow Celtic has used the appeal of football to engage men in a highly successful programme on health and wellbeing. The Programme for Dublin’s North Inner City also benefited from this expertise, as Glasgow Celtic is a partner alongside the Health Service Executive, Pfizer Healthcare Ireland, Dublin City Council and the Larkin Centre.

This Programme is a community-based initiative seeking to develop new, quality of life interventions, supportive of men living in the North Inner City of Dublin.
